Upgrading Your WordPress Blog

Upgrading your WordPress Blog is the first step in making sure your site is safe and secure from hackers. Believe it or not people do get kicks out of messing with other people’s stuff. Each time a new WordPress update comes along I would advise updating as their updates are established to protect you from the bad guys.

As you can see from the image there are 2 places to click to update. Either one works. Simply click on the update button then tell WordPress to update automatically. You will then have the most recent stable version of WordPress.

Changing the location of your WordPress Blog

Alright, now let’s say that you installed your WordPress blog to yoursite.com/funny/ but you want your blog to show up on yoursite.com. Once again this is a fairly simple process. This time, however, you’re actually going to have to make some changes outside of WordPress to do this. Log into your hosting account (Hostgator, IX Web Hosting, Powweb, Ipower, Godaddy, etc) and look for something labeled “File Manager.”
using file manager

Click on “File Manager” which will now bring you into a list of files. We’ll assume you only have 1 domain name for this walkthrough. Depending on your hosting company the first file name you’ll have to click on will be one of the following – The name of your website (yoursite.com), public_html if you’re using Ipower or Hostgator or htdocs if you’re using Powweb. Once you’ve clicked on that you’ll see some files and folders. Click on the folder that is named for your directory. In the case of the walkthrough we’re looking for the file folder “funny.” (yoursite.com/funny/)

locating index file

Now locate the index.php file. Download this file to your computer. You should be able to download it simply by clicking on it then clicking “Download” or checking the box then clicking the “Download” button. Once the file has been saved to your computer open it up with Notepad.

modifying index file

Look for the section of code that is highlighted above. This is the only thing you will be changing. Where it says (‘./wp-blog-header.php’) you want to change that to the location of your WordPress blog. In this example you would change it to read (‘./funny/wp-blog-header.php’) Now save your file in notepad. You are now going to upload this file to your root directory. Your root directory is the first thing you see after clicking on public_html, htdocs, or yoursite.com. Once that file is uploaded you want to go back into your WordPress Dashboard.

Scroll down to “Settings” then click on “General.”

You will see a section labeled “Blog address (URL).” You want to delete /funny/ from this section so it looks similar to the above picture. Now scroll down to the bottom and click save. Your blog can now be found at yoursite.com.

Installing Wordpress Using Install Central

Yet another system used by hosting providers is called Install Central. Hosting providers such as Powweb and Ipower use Install Central. Basically all of these are just different names for the exact same system. In your control panel look for the button labeled “Install Central” and click on it.

Once you’ve clicked on Install Central you’ll be brought to another screen.

Now simply click on “Begin Installation” then follow the directions on the screen. You will be able to choose a username, password, and location for your blog.

Installing WordPress Using EasyApps

EasyApps is another tool hosting companies may use for installing content management systems. The control panel is known as Hsphere. Content management system simply means some sort of program that is easy to use that builds a website for you. WordPress is not the only content management system out there, but it is by far the easiest to use and the most flexible.

Scroll down to the bottom and look for EasyApps Collection. Click on it to be brought to the next screen.

Once you’ve clicked on EasyApps you’ll see a large selection of different programs you can install. Click on WordPress.

Now click on “Install.” Follow the on screen instructions to set your username, wordpress blog location, and password. Don’t stress too much about the location, we’re going to go over how to change that in an upcoming post.

Installing Wordpress Using Fantastico

Different web hosting companies use different applications for installing content management systems. This walk through is for a hosting company using Fantastico. Fantastico is typically found on cpanel hosting companies such as Host Gator.

Once you’ve found the Fantastico button you want to click on it. You will then be brought to another screen.

installing wordpress on fastastico

You now want to click on the WordPress text under the section “blogs.”

Now you simply want to click on “New Installation.” You will then be taken to another screen where you get to choose where to install your WordPress directory as well as your username and password. Follow the on screen instructions and your WordPress blog will be up and running.

DO NOT use admin as your username. There are a lot of hacking programs out there that scan for WordPress blogs using that for a username and will exploit your blog, inserting a lot of garbage onto your site, making Google mad. Don’t worry though we’ll be going over security in a later post.

And you thought starting a website was going to be hard huh?
