Recommended WordPress Plugins
Plugins are a great way to get some extra features into your WordPress site. Here is a list of plugins that I highly recommend you use on your website.
- All In One SEO Pack – This plugin allows you to optimize your site one step further than WordPress allows. You will be able to set up your site title, page titles, meta keywords, and meta description, all of which are important for Search Engine Optimization.
- Google Analyticator – This is used to keep track of your visitors coming to your website. Simply sign up for a Google Analytics account then follow the simple on screen instructions. You will be able to keep track of how long a person has been on your site, where they came from, what size monitor they use, etc.
- Google XML Sitemaps – This plugin will automatically build a sitemap for your website. Sitemaps are used by search engines to keep track of all the pages and posts on your website. Each time you post something new XML Sitemaps will alert the search engines of your new post. It used to take days to get a page indexed, with this plugin it only takes hours.
- Smart Youtube – If you ever want to post a Youtube video to your website this is the way to go. With Smart Youtube you simply add one character and you’re ready to go. Example – the url for the video “Poker Money Clips” is http:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=H8DFVbd32wg . To insert this as a video all I have to do is this – httpv:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=H8DFVbd32wg and presto.
- Sociable – Social Bookmarking sites are becoming more and more popular online. Search engines give better rankings to pages that have more bookmarks. Why not make it easy on your visitors to add your site to their favorite bookmarking site? Sociable automatically adds bookmarks to the bottom of all your posts and pages so people can bookmark you.
- WP Render BlogRoll Links – With a simple piece of code you can create a page of links. Simply create a page called Links then add the piece of code WP Render tells you to and you have your own link page. You manage all your links through the Links tab on the dashboard.
- Fast and Secure Contact Form – Don’t want to be spammed? This form puts in a “captcha” (those letters you see every time you try and get a new yahoo or gmail account, or join a message board) so visitors have to type that in before the e-mail can be sent. Please note that if you are using a static front page I haven’t had much success with ANY contact forms. If you are using a static front page on WordPress you are going to have to upload php files to your server. Contact Form Lite works well for this purpose.
- FollowMe – If you have a Twitter account this is a must have. It places a “Follow Me” link on the side of your webpage for people to easily start following you.
- WordPress Popup Scheduler – If you want to have a great pop-up show up every time a new visitor comes to your page then this is the plug-in for you. Promote whatever you want. Easy to configure and update.
- Simply Exclude – If you want to exclude certain categories from your home page (meaning you’re displaying your latest posts and don’t have a static page) then this is the plugin for you. Let’s say you’re running a holdem strategies website but also want to include Omaha strategies, however, you don’t want to distract readers away from the latest holdem updates with Omaha. Use simply exclude to tell WordPress not to display your latest Omaha posts on your home page. They’ll still display elsewhere, just not on your home page. You can exclude based on a variety of options including author, category, tags, or pages.
- Extended Category Widget – If you would like to set up separate menus on your website then you need this plugin. Let’s say you have the following categories – Omaha strategy, omaha odds, holdem strategy, player types, and poker merchandise, but you want to break this up into 3 different menus. With Extended Category widget you can choose to only display the omaha categories in your Omaha widget, holdem in your holdem widget, and merch in your merchandise widget.
